Any movie that pisses off both George Bush and Sean Penn has to be good because of that alone! (Team America)

This week's movies (NY/LA only): The Final Cut - 40% positive reviews. Split opinions. Some people found it engrossing.
  • Positive: (1) "For a movie that often feels like it's cobbled together from pieces of Minority Report, Blade Runner and other futuristic odysseys, this one is weirdly engrossing." (2) "A thinking person's picture whose only flaw is that the movie is never quite as good as its fascinating concept."
  • Negative: (1) "No re-edits can save The Final Cut from its own preposterousness and lack of genuine thrills." (2) "If there are decent, human, post–Good Will Hunting roles for the actor somewhere between the manic and the catatonic, Robin Williams hasn't found them."

Three clips (extraits) from Five Children and It. "What they thought was going to be a dull summer in the country is about to become the most exciting adventure of their lives when five children dig up an eight thousand year old sand-fairy who is prepared to make their wildest dreams come true....at a price."

"to my utter amazement, my newest children's book -- the sweetest of the five I've published -- has been branded 'vulgar' and 'obscene' by angry, vocal readers who just don't get it"
  • "The book is called "The Boy Who Looked Like Lincoln," and it's about an 8-year-old who looks exactly like Honest Abe: He's got the hat, the mole, even the beard. The unhappy boy is sent to a summer camp for kids who look like things: toasters, bowling pins, the Titanic. In the end, he learns the valuable lesson that looks are not important; it's your character that counts. This doesn't explain why supermodels make so much more than schoolteachers, but hey, it's just a kids' book."

Three clips from Birth, the controversial movie with Kidman and the little kid.
  • The official release: "A metaphysical love story that explores the space between what we know and what we feel. Kidman stars as Anna, a delicate young widow who is on the verge of a new life when a solemn little boy appears, claiming to be the reincarnation of her dead husband. As Anna, Kidman achieves a breathtaking emotional transparency to portray an intelligent woman who discovers another side of herself in the face of a bizarre, yet tantalizing possibility. The actress is beautifully paired with Canadian child actor Cameron Bright, who portrays the boy interloper with a haunting stillness and conviction. Bringing an assured sense of style and form to a decidedly unconventional narrative, Glazer creates a world that is at once strange and familiar, like a fairy tale. Like many fairy tales, "Birth" is part romance, part mystery, and part family drama - woven into a magical whole about love, mortality and the unknown."
