Extreme sports - guy straps on a camera and parachutes out of a top story window at New York's Palace Hotel. He survived the jump, but unfortunately was carrying his wallet and was promptly mugged upon landing.

The world's greatest movie critic, El Filthedor, offers this week's review. The Filthy Critic weighs in on Spanglish. "Sanctimonious claptrap. Not much more to say. Writer-director James L Brooks made a movie of such stupendous self-absorption, shallowness, and of interest to so few that it hardly needs discussing. It's a story that will appeal only to wealthy assholes in LA with guilt complexes about their immigrant servants, and who think that deifying them is better than giving them Christmas bonuses."

The 10 Dumbest Things President Bush Said in 2004 (Not a joke list, but real Bush quotes). I don't often agree with end-of-year lists, but I think this guy did a good job on the list, and picked the right one for #1: "Our enemies ... never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

I'll bet you can't guess who is being discussed here. "She's going to be a huge movie star. She's like Meg Ryan or Cameron Diaz, with probably more depth." I'll give you a hint. The quote is from her dad.

Economy of tiny island town rises from Viagra.: "Barceloneta has come to be known as 'Ciudad Viagra.' The steel industry put Pittsburgh on the map. Automobiles did the same for Detroit. And beer made Milwaukee famous.
Can the sex-pill industry have the same potency for this community of 22,000 residents?"

TorrentBits.org and SuprNova.org Go Dark. If you don't "get it", these are two of the top Bittorrent sites. Bittorrent is a co-op technology used to trade movies and such without requiring the host site to absorb the massive bandwidth costs. Unlike traditional methods for downloading massive files, bittorrent actually gets faster as more people request a file.

Hey, from the looks of this Friday picture, Jacko will have no problem convincing a jury he's a normal guy. Cripes, he looks like a new Batman villain created in a laboratory - a DNA splice between Joker and Penguin.

The ultimate cruise - sail to Nova Scotia and listen every night to Garrison Keillor. For only $3800 a person. Is that a good price? It's hard to compare, but I'd have to say it's about the same as a week at a sleep-disorder clinic, if that helps you choose.

It was not a very good weekend at the box office - Lemony Snicket opened at $30 million, well below expectations for the $140 million movie.
  • Spanglish, an $80 million dollar movie, opened in a weak third, barely beating the Polar Express.
  • The Flight of the Phoenix didn't even make a blip in the radar, and actually finished below Christmas with the Kranks.
  • The only really good news was the performance of The Polar Express, which barely dropped from last week, and has now passed $120 million after a weak start. The total for Polar Express is now sitting at five times the opening weekend, and it will probably reach 7x. Films typically finish with about three times the opening weekend. (I suppose the record holder is My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which finished with 80x the opening weekend by becoming a gradual word-of-mouth blockbuster.)

We now know why Fox kept the new Dennis Quaid movie a secret. When critics finally got to see it, only 29% gave Flight of the Phoenix positive reviews. We don't know much about how the movie-going public feels about it, since it is basically playing to empty theaters, averaging about 20 people per screening.

It's getting to be quiet a battle for the most acting credits at IMDb. I'm not sure if there are others, but these two seem to be the champs: Mel Blanc - 903 credits, versus Ron Jeremy -865. Given that Jeremy is still alive and a mere 51 years old, you have to think he can take it eventually, even though he's down to a mere dozen credits per year. (In his prime, 40 a year was a possibility.)
