British government sought to avoid Nixon. A classic case of "dog bites man" journalism. Is there anyone who did not avoid Nixon? Now if they really loved Nixon and wanted to party him down - THAT would be news.

The Year in Culture - Neil LaBute, Lemony Snicket, Kenneth Pollack, and others on 2004's most notable cultural happenings. Slate asked them, "Which cultural happening most amazed or disappointed you this year?" It is an extraordinary experience to read what some intellectuals perceive as having been important. This article does synthesize some important trends or events, but also includes some personal interests in genuinely unimportant stuff that will be forgotten by ... hell, it's already forgotten.

Paris Hilton misses the opening of her first club.
  • "At least she had an heiress-appropriate excuse handy. 'I was in the Swiss Alps skiing and I got caught at the airport with all the holiday travel.'"
  • Life can be harsh. When it comes to suffering, there was Anne Frank, then Paris Hilton.

ESPN's Bill Simmons empties out the holiday mailbag.
  • "The movie ad should have come with this tag: "WARNING: CLINT EASTWOOD CRIES." I know actors have to make that leap at some point, but this was 50 times worse than Stallone breaking down in "Rocky 3" and 200 times worse than finding out about Mike Ditka's erectile dysfunction. Some lines just shouldn't be crossed. Could they at least leak a story that Clint couldn't make himself cry, so they had to use onions and salt water? I'm not sure I will ever get over this one."

Lots of excerpts from Clerks. By far, the most bizarre is this one, which is not from the film, but shows a very different way to end the movie!
