Today saluting the greatest casting choice in movie history: John Wayne as Genghis Khan

It is well-known that this film was Howard Hughes's favorite. Not so well remembered is that it was directed by song-and-dance man Dick Powell! I suppose Powell wasn't all that bad as a director because his other films have decent ratings at IMDB. This one sticks out like a sore thumb:

  • (7.85) - The Enemy Below (1957)
  • (6.55) - Split Second (1953)
  • (6.25) - The Hunters (1958)
  • (2.98) - The Conqueror (1956)

The Pop Culture Palace is updated with Songs #10-#5 from 1957, with videos.
#7. You Send Me. Sam Cooke. This gorgeous love song has become a standard of the soul genre. It was the first pop hit for the incomparable Sam Cooke and what a hit it was. It spent six weeks at number one on the R&B charts and three weeks at number one on the pop charts.

The Honey Brothers Band
Submitter wrote:

Hey, I saw your link to Ed Helms' band and found another good one for you. This is Adrian Grenier aka Vinnie Chase from Entourage's band; and while that's pretty cool in itself, the better part is there's a member of the band whose actual name is Ari Gold! Also in the band is Ari's twin brother Ethan Gold and a guy named Dan Posner who is a Psychiatrist that went to Columbia. They are a very solid band(think Weezer circa Blue Album), and all multi-talented. Their show in Chicago last weekend blew me away.

IRAQIS ISSUE "THE U.S. STUDY GROUP REPORT"
The Report points to a dysfunctional electoral system, an inability to devise coherent immigration or health care programs, and America's disturbing obsession with crass game shows that feature scantily-clad women holding up dollar signs.

The Lonesome Trio - featuring the Daily Show's Ed Helms
Ed, Ian, and Jake, old Oberlin College buddies, began playing together in 1994 as part of the traditional bluegrass band, Weedkiller. Years later, the three of them reassembled in New York as the Lonesome Trio, compiling a repertoire of their own unclassifiable songs and performing them at New York venues such as the Rockwood Music Hall, Parkside Lounge, Bowery Ballroom, Irving Plaza, and Galapagos.

He's the boss: Steinbrenner considers Gooden return
New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner met with Dwight Gooden this week and said he'd consider giving the former star a role with the team provided he stays off drugs and alcohol until mid-February.
Say, what? So Gooden gets a job if he stays straight until mid-February. Let's see ... if they get paid every two weeks, his drug dealer should be stockin' up around March 1

Britney: "I went a little too far with partying"
It's also been 2 years since I've even celebrated my birthday. Every move I make at this point has been magnified more than I expected, and I probably did take my new-found freedom a little too far. Anyway, thank God for Victoria's Secrets' new underwear line! I look forward to a new year, new music and a new me.

I am willing to release a politically/morally correct, fully adequite letter to the press if any of you are willing to help. Simply to state my oppinions on how our society should be educated on for the better of our country. Our people. Also because I have such an impact on our younger generations, as well as generations older than me. Which we all know and can obviously see.
People are just mean.

Tom Hanks is the most appealing movie star
The reaction to Cruise is the most negative: While 12% say they make an effort to see his movies, nearly three times that many (34%) say they avoid seeing his films. No other star tested in the poll came close to the negative reaction to Cruise -- Jolie had the next highest "avoid seeing" score, at 18%. Cruise has become a controversial figure in recent years with his Scientology-based statements and personal behavior on national talk shows and in the media.

The complete Screech sex tape
All kidding aside, this is one of the better sex tapes. The action is not all that hot, but it's more than just boring in-out. Screech keeps up a running commentary, and while he's no Colbert, sometimes he scores a decent zinger.

PARTY'S OVER! JEFFERIES GROUP FINED $10M
Wall Street watchdogs nailed Jefferies Group with nearly $10 million in fines, claiming that the brokerage firm let an executive use company cash to ply Fidelity Investments' traders with lavish gifts - including underwriting a booze-fueled bachelor party replete with strippers and dwarves - to win business.

As a former marketing guy, I have to admit to some curiosity about the financial considerations. I can see how the strippers could provide a solid return on investment, but I wonder how much extra business they got by adding the dwarves.

Ten Earth-Shattering Nude Scenes.
2. Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The standard against which teen movie nudity is measured. It may not be the most graphic or revealing, but it had all the key elements: A hot young actress you've been dying to see topless (erm, Phoebe), a completely gratuitous set-up (Judge Reinhold's masturbatory day dream), and a hilarious pay-off (she walks in on him mid-jerk). It's bulletproof, and it's a classic.
