Today we salute a young man who's already an "other crappy" legend

One wonders. Is K-Fed just another William Hung to be forgotten by next year, or is he the Bill Shatner of a new generation? Shatner's saving graces are a good sense of humor and a vague sense of his true merit, while Federline seems to be deluded and humorless. But if he could "embrace the bad" ...

Desperately Seeking Susan, The Musical
I'm thinkin' it just might be time to drag out my long-buried musical drama version of Strindberg's Dance of Death, which is still listed in the Guinness Book of records as the only concept ever deemed "too pretentious" by Stephen Sondheim. Maybe I can sneak it past Sondheim if I rework it as a comedy.

Great Christmas traditions. From Catalan: El Caganer -The Crapping Man
What could be dearer to the heart of Other Crap than the little Spanish guy who craps on the Nativity Scene. I'm not making this up!

"El Caganer, a rather strange figure, has been a characteristic of Nativity scenes all over Catalonia for many years. No self- respecting Catalan Bethlehem scene would be complete without him! Nowadays he comes in many shapes and forms, from monks to shepherds, Barcelona or Madrid football players to famous film stars - all performing the exact same action - defecating. That's right! They are actually squatting down, with their trousers round their knees, having a bowel movement! Los Caganers first began to make an appearance in Nativity scenes in Catalonia in the late seventeenth century, but didn't really achieve widespread popularity until the nineteenth century. Nowadays they are as important a character as Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus himself. Look carefully at any Nativity scene in Catalonia and you will always find him lurking in the background, replete with the traditional red Catalan hat. So what do they actually stand for? Believe it or not, the widely-accepted answer to that question is really a very simple one. Their ''fertilizer'' enriches the earth around them, thus promising a good harvest) during the forthcoming year. This translates into a general good omen for the future. Upon purchasing a Caganer, are told that owning him will bring good luck and prosperity. One thing is certain, they do say much about the Catalan sense of humour."

Turkmen President Niyazov dies
"Niyazov had led Turkmenistan since 1985, when it was still a Soviet republic. After the 1991 Soviet collapse, he retained control and began creating an elaborate personality cult and turning Turkmenistan into one of the most oppressive of the ex-Soviet states. He ordered the months and days of the week named after himself and his family, and statues of him were erected throughout the nation. He is listed as author of the 'Rukhnama' (Book of the Soul) that was required reading in schools. Children pledged allegiance to him every morning."

The Sporting News has chosen LaDainan Tomlinson as the Sportsman of the Year
They've made some damned silly choices in the past. Matt Leinart? The second best college QB and the second-best guy on his own team? A guy who was taken tenth in the NFL draft? A guy who has accumulated an NFL passer rating of 74? Oh well, setting the past aside, it's difficult to quibble with this year's choice.
