Man beaten to death after an argument about Metallica
Get this. A 200 pound guy grabs a 15 year old boy and stars assaulting him physically in public. The boy tells him to let go. He doesn't, so the boy's friends come to his defense and beat the shit out of the guy, but stop punching him when he lets their friend go. (According to all witnesses.) He dies. He is found to have a blood alcohol level twice the legal intoxication limit.

Here's the kicker: the boys are charged with manslaughter.

Is Mark McGwire a Hall of Famer?
Ridiculous question, if you are asking it based on his performance. You think Tony Gwynn was a good hitter, right? His lifetime on base percentage was .388. McGwire's was .394. Look at that another way. Gwynn is considered a hall of famer strictly for his ability to get on base, but McGwire was better at that. And that was the best part of Gwynn's offensive game, and the worst part of McGwire's! McGwire was a far, far better hitter than guys like Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks, and those guys are not borderline Hall of Famers. In fact, McGwire has a higher lifetime OBP and a higher SLG than Willie Mays, and his numbers are also better relative to the leagues he played in.

  • On Base: McGwire .394, Mays .384
  • On Base versus league: McGwire .062, Mays .055
  • Slugging: McGwire .588, Mays .557
  • Slugging versus league: McGwire .180, Mays .157

Plus, Mays's overall stats are padded by six years in the Polo Grounds, and his "comparison to league" stats are helped by playing his entire career in a league without a designated hitter, so the league performance always includes the batting of pitchers. McGwire's advantage over the league (.062, .180) is comparable to Jimmy Foxx's (.066, .187), and again you must remember that Foxx is always compared to leagues where pitchers got 10% of the at bats. So if your question is, "Does a guy who was as good a hitter as Willie Mays and Jimmy Foxx belong in the Hall of Fame?", I believe the precise answer is "Duh!"

On the other hand, if you are asking based upon skepticism about his substance use, maybe you have a point, but I don't know.

Screen Actors' Guild announces 2006 award nominations
DiCaprio was nominated for both Best Actor (Blood Diamond) and Best Supporting Actor (The Departed)

Besides DiCaprio, the best actor nominees are Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson"), Peter O'Toole ("Venus"), Will Smith ("The Pursuit of Happyness") and Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland").

Best actress nominees are the same women (Brits and Streep) who are nominated every year, except for Penelope Cruz ("Volver"). The others are Judi Dench ("Notes on a Scandal"), Helen Mirren ("The Queen"), Meryl Streep ("The Devil Wears Prada") and Kate Winslet ("Little Children"). It was Dench's record 11 millionth nomination, with the younger Streep only a few hundred behind.

Dench has actually been nominated for five Oscars and 20 BAFTAs. Dench's Oscar count is so low because she wasn't nominated until 1998, when she was already in her sixties, although she has been getting BAFTA nominations since the reign of Henry VII, and is the only Shakespearian actress to have been handed an award by "Billy" Shakespeare himself. (Kidding aside, she won her first BAFTA in 1966!)

Streep has 13 Oscar nominations, but a mere 10 BAFTAs. Streep has been an also-ran the last nine times she was nominated for an Oscar, having last won in 1983!

Which Movie Download Site Is Best?
I found this to be a very interesting article. I've been thinking of trying out internet-delivered content, and this guy tried out five different services. He also explained how to get your VGA computer to talk to an HDTV-ready television.

His bottom line: some services are getting there, but nobody is there yet. "Sure these services will save you a trip to the local video store or a wait for DVDs in the mail, but downloading a movie will take at least an hour—chances are you could get a DVD at the local video store faster. The selection of movies and picture quality isn't yet near what you get with Netflix or the brick-and-mortar video rental store. The average bitrate for a DVD is 5Mb/sec, compared with the best bitrate found in these services, Movielink's 1.3Mb/sec; most of the others were much lower."
