Weekend Box Office Results for January 5-7, 2007
There was some good news in a week which was written off by the forecasters. Both Children of Men and Freedom Writers did substantially better than expected. Predicted to be far down the pack, they actually finished 3rd and 4th, as both of them trounced expectations by 60% or more.

Each of the two comes with solid reviews. Children of Men even comes with some ecstatic reviews and an impressive 93% at Rotten Tomatoes. (And I would be greatly surprised if it fails to win an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography.)

They each averaged more than $7500 per theater, and therefore managed to trounce Happily N'Ever after in total revenues, even though the poorly reviewed kiddie film is in far more theaters!

The fourth new release was the one with Cedric the Alleged Entertainer, and it did slightly better than expected, which means it was about as popular as the war in Iraq.

Night at the Museum has now reached $164 million, and Will Smith's movie has now passed $124 million. Happy Feet and Casino Royale dropped out of the top 12, but are still going pretty strong and have reached $185m and $159m respectively.

Overall results were dead even with the equivalent weekend last year.

"The National Society of Film Critics, in a departure from most year-end critics' prizes, named the Spanish language picture Pan's Labyrinth best film of 2006"
You should realize that their selection almost never agrees with Oscar, so this choice is almost a sure-fire sign that Pan has no Oscar Best Picture potential, despite its 99% positive reviews. It should be the best foreign-language film.

Best Actress: Helen Mirren, for The Queen.

"Forest Whitaker's masterful playing as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland bested Peter O'Toole's moving portrait of a dying matinee idol in Venus by a single vote--after the two tied on the first ballot."

Marky Mark was named best supporting actor for his roley role in Scorsese's The Departed.

Greengrass was their best director for United 93.

Emmanuel Lubezki won for best cinematography for his work in Children of Men. (If Oscar doesn't mirror that one with at least a nomination, it would be a grave injustice.)

I find your lack of pants disturbing.

The Force is strong in my pants.

I cannot teach him. The boy has no pants.

You came in those pants? You're braver than I thought.

I think you just can't bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your pants.

I've just made a deal that will keep the Empire out of our pants forever.
