First HD-DVD Movie Leaked Onto BitTorrent at TorrentFreak
"The HD-DVD has been cracked, and high definition content is now being distributed freely over BitTorrent. We all knew this would happen sooner or later, looks it was “sooner”. The first HD-DVD to be uploaded to BitTorrent is Serenity, the Firefly movie."

The 20 most hyped movies of 2007
Barring an unforeseen catastrophe, this summer should produce the biggest grosses in movie history. Three of the top five grossers in history will spawn a sequel: the Shrek series, the Pirates series, and the Spider-Man series. In addition, 2007 will produce a Simpsons movie, a new Die Hard, the Tarantino/Rodriguez collaboration, a new Harry Potter film, and the much-ballyhooed 300

Ex-Playmate Reveals Playboy Mansion Secrets
"Well, most people don't want to admit that they had sex with a 78 year-old. The night I was there 10 of the 12 girls had sex with him. He doesn't really do anything. He just lies there with his Viagra erection. It's just a fake erection, and each girl gets on top of him for two minutes while the girls in the background try to keep him excited. They'll yell things like, 'F-k her daddy, f-k her!' There's a lot of cheerleader going on!"

The 100 greatest television quotes and catchphrases ever.
Their undefined concept of a TV catchphrase appears to be nebulous and/or just plain silly. Most of the selections really are TV catchphrases, but then the list goes off the rails toward the end. I wouldn't classify "One giant leap for mankind" or "Ask not what your country can do for you" in the same category as "Where's the beef?" or "I can't believe I ate the whole thing."

Donald Trump and the death of the American gentleman
"Trump has never outgrown his obsession with unbridled self-aggrandizement. Indeed, he has not evolved, but devolved. His narcissism and boastfulness scrape the skies, just like his buildings. Enlightenment seems utterly beyond Trump, who continues to believe that self-glorification is life's only purpose. If wisdom's highest manifestation is discerning a cause greater than oneself, then Trump is mired in an abyss of self-absorbed darkness."

Weekend Box Office Results for January 12-14, 2007
It was a very odd weekend. In a week with four tepid choices among the wide releases, moviegoers found other things to do and every movie but one fell below expectations. Many of them came up short by percentages well into double digits. It seems that the weak new selections kept people away from theaters in general, because the carry-overs also underperformed.

The one film that survived did not merely endure, but prospered. Stomp the Yard took the weekend by storm, grossing 40% more than expected, and easily taking the #1 spot overall. It took in more than all the other new releases added together!

The only other new film close to respectability in a wide release was Alpha Dog, which performed about as expected. Of course the expectations were modest to begin with.

The Dreamgirls expansion strategy disappointed as well, as the Oscar hopeful performed about 30% below the Warrior's prediction

The weekend was about 5% below last year's second weekend, which was in turn about 13% below the previous year.

Primeval bombed, but seemed like Titanic compared to Arthur and the Invisibles, which established itself as a laughingstock with a gross of only $4 million in 2400 theaters. The film had a purported budget of $86 million, which would make it one of the all-time financial fiascos except that it's already a monster hit in France, where it grossed an incredible $33 million. (The population of France is about a fifth that of the USA!)

The only other bright spot in the dreary picture was the Spanish-language critical darling Pan's Labyrinth which, as I sniffed out from the sell-out here in Austin, kicked some ass in its tiny roll-out. Its distro was only 194 theaters, but it averaged more than $10,000 per screen, approximately the same average as Stomp the Yard
