Writers Guild announces annual award nominees
"Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen and three collaborators will vie for best adapted screenplay against the writers of two other comedies, "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Thank You For Smoking," and two deadly serious dramas, "Little Children" and "The Departed."

Two more comedies, "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Stranger Than Fiction," were nominated for best original screenplay along with three dramas -- the globe-spanning saga "Babel," royal family portrait "The Queen" and the September 11 thriller "United 93."

"Netlore Archive: Emailed photos show a strange catamaran-like vessel consisting of a glass-walled cabin suspended over a pair of giant pontoons via tall, spidery legs"
"These images began making the rounds in October 2006, generating a good deal of discussion on Internet message boards, where a consensus was rapidly reached that they are authentic and reveal the prototype of an inflatable power catamaran designed by Antrim Associates based on a concept by oceanographer Ugo Conti. According to Yachting Monthly, the experimental vessel is 100 feet long and 50 feet wide and powered by twin diesel engines mounted to the rear of the inflatable pontoon hulls. The cabin is suspended on flexible legs about 15 feet above and between the hulls, allowing them to glide independently over the service of the water."

What ever happened to fender skirts and curb feelers
"You kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you. Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental."

The Weekend Warrior's box office analysis for the upcoming weekend
He predicts a very soft weekend. There is only one new film this week, and it is an uninspired remake. (The Hitcher. How desperate does one have to be for material in order to consider remaking a C. Thomas Howell movie? Can Soul Man be far behind?) Looks like the top twelve will not be much above $70 million. That would be considerably below last weekend and far below last year's equivalent weekend.

"The good shepherdess looked positively peeved on the red carpet alongside life partner Brad Pitt. In fact, rather than an earth mother out to save all the world's orphans, she looked more like the 'Alien' mother, poised to eat her young."

Earth seen from four billion miles away
"That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

O.J. confesses. Really. O.J's own ghostwriter calls him a murderer.
"Fenjves told me, there 'was talk he was going to do this as a straight confession.' A working title for the book at one point was not If I Did It, but I Did It. The title was suggested not by Regan, but by Simpson. What do you have to do in this country to get yourself thrown in jail?"

THE 50 SEXIEST CELEB "NIP SLIPS"
When I started using the term "nip slip" occasionally, back in 1995 or 1996, I was not aware of ever having heard it before. I thought I was creating the term, and used it only rarely to get some admittedly cheap laughs out of a deliberately provocative non-PC term. Now it is ubiquitous. I don't know whether I am really responsible for that. That's probably WAY too self-important on my part. I suppose that I just had it stored in my subconscious from some other source. But I do know that if I did either create or even help to popularize the term, I regret it. Now I cringe whenever I see it. It seems coarse and vulgar. The guy who created that term is an ass for having done so, even if it is me.

The complete list of Golden Globe winners (and nominees)
The guy who plays Borat won "Best Actor, Musical or Comedy"

Eastwood's Iwo Jima film beat out Pan's Labyrinth for "Best Foreign Language Film"

Scorsese won Best Director, but The Departed did not win Best Picture.

The two winners were Babel and Dreamgirls

Helen Mirren won two different acting awards, for playing two different Queen Elizabeths

"I don't get it" department: Children of Men received nary a nomination! It was a big year for Spanish-speaking directors: Del Toro, Inarritu, and Almodovar were all recognized for various achievements, but Cuaron was left in the dust.
