Miss USA Tara Conner Tells Matt Lauer About Her Cocaine Use
I'm not one of those old guys who misses the old days, but I do miss the old-fashioned Miss Americas and USAs who quoted from Jesus and wanted to win so they could meet Pat Boone. They usually said they would be virgins on their wedding day. Those women were a real piece of Americana. Now they quote from the Marquis de Sade and have Colombian drug lords on speed dial.

So now there are two man-made objects visible from space: The Great Wall of China and The Great Penis of Bellemoor.

Don't write me. I know it's an urban myth.

The curse of the Oscar
"Sometimes people win because the stars are in alignment and the perfect actor found the perfect role at the right time, but that doesn't guarantee a lifetime of follow-ups to what may be serendipitous circumstances," said Leonard Maltin, film critic and historian with entertainment news program Entertainment Tonight. He said the phenomenon is known in Hollywood circles as the "F. Murray Abraham syndrome"

Great anecdotes about how Old U.S.S.R. made Old Europe look new
"The funeral of Yuri Andropov. In case you've forgotten, he was one of those late-period Soviet leaders who looked like he'd been plucked in haste from the local embalmer's and propped up against the balcony for the May Day parade. When he was eventually pronounced (officially) dead in 1984, Margaret Thatcher was prevailed upon by an aide to stop at a shoe store en route to the airport and get some fleece-lined boots for the chilly February burial. She grumbled about the cost all the way to Moscow. There she met Andropov's successor, Konstantin Chernenko, whom the Politburo had anointed as the next cadaver-in-chief. And, after shaking hands with him, she stopped complaining about the cost of her Kremlin boots. "They were a prudent long-term investment," she told her aide.

German Dwarf Laughing at a Camel
"From the film Even Dwarfs Started Small (Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen). A 1970 film by German director Werner Herzog. A group of dwarfs and little people confined in an institution on a remote island rebel against the guards and director (all dwarfs as well) in a display of raw and nonsensical violence (setting fire to the building, making a car run in circle, crucifying a monkey, making fun of a camel, etc.)."

Pan's Labyrinth, as reviewed by The Filthy Critic
If you read it long enough, you may actually find a mention of the movie in there somewhere.

"I can understand that he wants to show how downright shitty the Spanish Civil War was, and how it tore a country apart. But the violence is a bit much and it's lingered over like the last biscuit in the warmer at Country Buffet."

94% Of All E-Mail is spam
94% seems low to me. There have been mornings when I've checked my "unread mail" and found a thousand messages - NONE of them legitimate. Spam filters send almost all of them to the "spam" folder, but about 40 a day sneak through to the in-box, mostly those in the Cyrillic alphabet. Lord knows why anyone would want to send me advertising in Russian in the first place. On a normal morning, there are 10-15 real emails among the thousand. Sad state of affairs.

dangerously fun - how to build it
"Many of the projects described on this website are dangerous. You must use this information at your own discretion."

My friends and I messed with a boomerang when we were in high school. We got to where we could throw the thing a couple of hundred feet, but absolutely 0% of it was in a direction back toward the thrower. Essentially, it was a funny-shaped frisbee as we used it.
