Daily Box Office for Friday, February 2, 2007
No surprises. The two new films took 1-2, but with mediocre grosses. The only news is that The Messengers (horror) beat Because I Said So (chick flick), but that race was a toss-up, at least based on the forecasts.

"Blu-Ray movies are outselling HD-DVD by over a 2:1 margin; in fact, closer to 3:1."
"If this trend continues, we may very well see the end of HD-DVD, with Blu-Ray." The explanation? The article suggest it's the synergy between PS3 and Blu-Ray, but the real reason is that the analyst forced the numbers! He chose two weeks in which Blu-Ray had new releases while HD did not. Overall, HD is ahead 100-92. So don't make any decision quite yet. The battle rages on.

Of course the real story is that both formats are bombing. VHS is outselling them both!! Like most consumers, I'm just watching from the sidelines. I don't have either player or a single disk in either format.

Obvious headline of the day: Pollock paintings are fakes.
Actually, though, I believe they are referring to some paintings that Pollock did not actually create, as opposed to the other fakes he really did make.

This year's high school debate topic: Resolved: that Washington Post Military Analyst William Arkin Should Be Beaten Like the Repulsive Sack of Shit He Is.
The strongest argument for the affirmative: that whole pesky "repulsive sack of shit" thing

The strongest argument for the negative: it would cause undue financial hardship on his real employers: al-Qaeda

Global Warming Wakes Groundhogs Earlier
By the way, in case you hadn't heard Punxutawney Phil predicted an early spring this year (no shadow). This is only the 15th time that has happened out of 111 recorded instances, giving Phil a .135 average, which sounds puny, but he's .367 with runners in scoring position in the late innings of close games. That is one clutch groundhog.
