"Berners-Lee called for open standards instead of closed DRM technologies. Instead of DRM, copyright holders should 'allow people to do the right thing' by providing the information on how to legally use the material"
Yup. Relying on people to do the right thing is always the perfect solution for any problem! Never known it to fail.

Using Safari can slow your system down as much as 76% vs Firefox
This is not about the speed at which a browser renders web pages, but the overall speed of your PC with a given browser in RAM. (Thus the speed of seemingly unrelated programs when that browser is open.)

Here is Safari's response

"Doctor sues girl, 11, over inline-skating collision"
"Dr. Alexander Dlugi, now 54, sued the child, claiming she was negligent and caused the collision by reacting unreasonably when he approached her from behind on Sugar Maple Row, shouted "watch out" and rang his bicycle bell."

The best line in the story: "The accident expert said on Wednesday Dlugi could have avoided the collision by simply riding around the skater."

Riding around her? C'mon! Who could think of that, except an "expert" who has spent his whole life studying these things?

By the way, there is no truth to the rumor that "Dlugi" is the Polish word for "douchebag". (It's actually the Polish adjective meaning "long")

Prior scheduled for season-ending injury on Monday
He had a chance for the season-clincher on Wednesday, and blew it. Pitching simulated innings, he barely managed to react fast enough on a vicious liner up the middle. With a little luck, he will be injured soon enough to take this year's first place trophy away from Alicia Silverstone in the Ken Griffey Canasta League

"If I had known that all it took to get a movie financed and distributed was to hire an alabaster starlet with body dysmorphic disorder and a forehead that looks like an infant crowning and then throw her in a pair of Daisy Dukes and ask her to thrash about like a goddamn wolf in heat, then I'd be motherfucking Steven Spielberg, now wouldn't I?"

Bottom line: a major failure in the making. Excellent speed, but lots of problems with the downloads, and then only .wmv files available, and some of those of questionable quality.

"Search engines have a First Amendment right to reject ads as part of their protected right to speak or not"
"Search engines (in turn) aren't state actors and are not bound by the First Amendment, so they do not deprive advertisers of First Amendment rights by rejecting their advertising. This opinion is consistent with at least a dozen other cases holding that private IAPs and websites aren't state actors."

This week's new movies:
Zodiac: 93% positive reviews. Summary: exhaustingly detailed crime thriller, tense, involving. As good as you hoped from Fincher after four years.

Black Snake Moan: 63% positive. Summary: has everything you need in a movie: Samuel L Jackson, great blues music, and a naked Christina Ricci chained to a radiator.

Wild Hogs: 33% positive reviews. Summary: that's 33% more than expected.

The Weekend Warrior's box office forecast/analysis for this upcoming weekend.
He thinks Wild Hogs will ride its star power to an easy first place, with Fincher's Zodiac coming in a strong second. No other film is expected to pull in more than $10m. Black Snake Moan is expected to finish in 6th overall, but 3rd in "revenues per theater." (It's only in 1250 theaters.)

"You probably have never run across Bob the Angry Flower in the course of your webmastery, but it's a previously brilliant and now somewhat coasting webcomic with an angry and semi-malevolent anthropomorphic flower. Amongst his running gags are the eternal war between robots and bears, wacky hijinks with Kofi Annan, and most importantly, a hatred of the misuse of the apostrophe. Apparently apostrophe abuse is rampant in Alberta. Who knew? Francophone Canadian thing I guess.

There's also a lot of choice stuff in the archives. Interestingly, Steve Notley wrote strips about Osama and the Taliban 3 years before 9/11. "

Not a bad idea. And while she's in school, maybe they have a drama department. She could take a few acting classes, thus padding out her index with some solid C-plusses.

Brit college students may be prosecuted for publishing one of the Danish Mohammed cartoons
"... to the Crown Prosecution Service, which will decide whether to press charges against the students in the coming weeks."

If this sounds odd to you Americans, remember that the First Amendment is the one thing which truly makes America unique. The USA is the only country where the appropriateness of public political speech is decided by the individual, not by the government. In every other country one may be jailed for the public expression of an idea not pre-approved by the government. ("Hate crimes.")

If you are interested to see what the controversy is all about, this page includes a comprehensive survey of how Mohammed has been portrayed through history, including the Danish cartoons

Here is a video of the protest rally in London after the publication
