Another contender for our "all time bad music" championship. ABBA sings "California Here I Come," probably quite a bit worse than the drunks at your Christmas party.

George Will calls Anne Coulter "him"
The transcript says, "Well, the less said about her the better," but I'm pretty sure he said "about him." (Listen to the tape yourself.) Does George have the inside scoop?

Pop Culture Palace is updated with the five best songs of 1961
What a treat to see and hear Patsy Cline singin' Crazy. Texas legend Willie Nelson wrote that song. And then Ray and the Raelettes perform Hit the Road Jack!

Depressing, self-important documentarian complains about the only thing in the Oscar ceremony worth watching
Couldn't agree more. Let's strip the ceremony of all entertainment value and ribbing so it can be four hours of mutual Hollywood masturbation.

The guy doesn't seem to realize that Seinfeld was making a serious point with his comedy - that the only way to get a documentary into the Oscar race is to make it dire and depressing. Seinfeld said it in a lot sweeter way than I would have. I would have pointed out we were going to look at a bunch of nominees for the second-best documentary of the year, because the best-reviewed documentary of the year wasn't nominated - apparently because it was too much fun!

Note the Golden Tomato Awards. The best documentary was Wordplay, the one about crossword puzzles, and it got 95% good reviews, compared to 92% for the Oscar winner, An Inconvenient Truth!!) And that was reviewed by just about every major critic. So how could such a masterpiece not be nominated. Oh, I don't know, could it be because it wasn't depressing? Seinfeld's remark was right on target.

Sen Tom Eagleton is dead at 77
He was quite loved in Missouri. You may remember that he was a VP candidate for about two weeks in 1972 before he was branded a crazy man because of some voluntary hospitalizations and electric shock treatments. Of course, this was a comedy writer's dream, and he was the official late-night punch line, kind of the Britney Spears of his own 15 minutes, until he finally withdrew in favor of Shriver.

Baby boomer nostalgia: intro, credits, and opening theme song for Fireball XL5. Unlike the monotonous Supercar theme, this one is a catchy little do-wop love song!

Weekend Box Office Results for March 2-4, 2007
Sometimes the ball bounces funny. None of the new releases performed according to expectations. Wild Hogs far exceeded the predictions (despite poor reviews), while the Fincher film and the naked Ricci flick fell far short of predictions (despite good to excellent reviews). Shows you how irrelevant critics are.

The overall box office was more than 25% above last year, but that's misleading. Last year's was a disastrous weekend. This year is actually slightly below the comparable weekend in 2005, so the increase over last year is not really something to crow about. It was an OK weekend, no better. Although a phenomenal ten million dollar surplus was picked up by Wild Hogs (compared to forecasts), the other two new releases lost seven of it.

"BRITNEY Spears has flipped her lid in rehab, trying to hang herself with a bedsheet after screaming 'I am the antichrist' to frightened staff."
She made the demonic cry after scrawling the devil's number '666' across her head."

One can no longer make jokes about this. She is psychotic, in desperate condition, and in need of help, even if this story is false, which it probably is.

But even after saying that, I have to ask something. If Britney is the Anti-Christ, does that make K-Fed the Uncle-Christ?

Sienna is certainly not one to pussyfoot around the issues, is she? Just a short while ago she referred to Steel City as Shitsburgh.

Radical lefty documentary filmmakers expose the corruption of ... Michael Moore?
Fascinating article. They started out to make an homage to their hero, the man who popularized documentary filmmaking. And then they found out Moore was lying and manipulating to produce the conclusions he had foreordained. "If we think it's wrong for the government to lie and manipulate, how do we think that [left-wingers] doing it is the solution?"

They finally concluded: "When we started this project we hoped to have done a documentary that celebrated Michael Moore. We were admirers and fans," said Debbie Melnyk, who made the film with her husband, Rick Caine. "Then we found out certain facts about his documentaries that we hadn't known before. We ended up very disappointed and disillusioned."

When Caine and Melnyk began to follow him as part of their own documentary, their efforts to interview him met with the same kind of obstruction, denial and, ultimately, physical ejection that Moore had suffered when he tried to track down Roger Smith, the former chief executive of General Motors, for his first film, Roger & Me.

Strangest of all, it turned out that while Moore practiced dodging in the Roger Smith manner, the real Roger Smith did not! He actually granted Moore not one but two interviews which, of course, were not included or mentioned in Moore's film because their existence (and maybe their content) contradicted the predetermined storyline!

"Trek fans' communicators -- also known as the Internet -- are humming with news that Matt Damon, Adrien Brody and Gary Sinise may report to the bridge when the Star Trek franchise reboots with 'Star Trek XI' next year."
It makes some sense. All three guys fit the roles quite well, but all three of them are too old. Damon and Brody are the same age as Shatner and Nimoy were when the series aired, and Sinese is about five years older than DeForrest Kelley was. That would make perfect sense if the story took place during the same time period as the original series, but the plot is supposed to be about when they all met for the first time at the academy.

I think we can say Brody is actually OK, since Spock could have looked the same fifteen years earlier. His aging process is uncertainly defined.

But Kirk is human, so he should be about 20 years old in the academy. Bones is about ten years older, so should look about 30 when Kirk is 20. In other words, Damon is 15 years too old for the job, and Sinese is actually old enough to play McCoy's father!

Way more than you need to know about Harry Potter's magic wand
"Radcliffe's little Daniel is, well nothing more than average. 'Maybe it was cold up on the stage but it wasn't anything special,' our spy says. 'When he had his back to the audience he pulled on it a bit to make it appear bigger.' And if you really need to know - we're told Radcliffe is uncircumcised."

"Ann Coulter couldn't find a homosexual at a Barbra Streisand concert in San Francisco on gay pride day"
"Edwards hasn't responded to Coulter yet, but when he does, he should step up to the plate. After all, there is something gay-ish about him. He's pretty. He's passionate. He spends a lot of time on his hair. And what's wrong with that?"

Unfortunately, the election is tied at one, since each of the country's two citizens voted for himself. They don't expect to break the deadlock until one of them can get a mail-order bride from Latvia.

Why Sirius is still doomed
"Millions of people bought Sirius shares at $6 to $8 for their retirement accounts, and rode them down to $3.50, never losing faith in Stern. At this point, they need to face up to the fact that they're screwed. Stern made half a billion. They will make nothing. They can file SIRI stock certificates away under 'S' for stupid. They blew it."

Justice Department takes aim at image-sharing sites
The Bush administration has accelerated its Internet surveillance push by proposing that Web sites must keep records of who uploads photographs or videos in case police determine the content is illegal and choose to investigate.

A classic illustration of how the USA thinks it owns the internet, reminiscent of the letters that the movie studios send to Swedish websites informing them of DMCA violations! Obviously, if this sort of thing becomes standard practice in the USA, the business will simply go elsewhere. Rapidshare, for example, is already in Germany, so people will simply place objectionable content there (as I'm sure they already must do.)
