Daily Box Office for Friday, March 9, 2007
The big news: 300 kicks ass, with nearly $28 million on Friday alone. Analysts had it pegged way too low. It seems to be headed to an easy $60m, maybe 70. I thought the projections were low, as I mentioned earlier this week, but I wasn't sure of it until I went to a noon showing on Friday - and had to squeeze into a middle seat. Those noon Friday screenings during the school year are normally empty, so I realized this film was gonna kick some ass at the box.

Nicole Richie bikini shots
Nicole redux. She seems to have come back from her anorexic stage, although she is still petite.

Nevada Dems pull out of Fox debate
This story reads like a classic duel between unarmed men. The Fox News president made a joke about President Bush being so dumb he couldn't tell the difference between Obama and Osama.

But Harry Reid didn't get the joke (it's actually a leftie joke!), and took offense because the joke compared a presidential candidate to Osama!!

"The world premiere of a John Lennon documentary was canceled on Tuesday after Lennon's widow Yoko Ono threatened to sue Berwick Academy if it showed the film"
Ray Thomas, the film's executive producer and a partner in the World Wide Video LLC, which owns the footage, said on Tuesday he and his partners legally own the copyright. "Yoko Ono's lawyers mean-spiritedly threatened the school with an array of charges if they ran the film," said Thomas, a Rye, N.H., resident. "They had no choice but to feel fear."

Ah, that Yoko. Always making friends wherever she goes.

Americans shrinking as junk food takes its toll
It seems superfluous to point out that articles in the Guardian are unscientific, but in order to draw any conclusions it is necessary to compare like groups. Are Americans shrinking? I don't know, but I do know that you can't determine that unless you compare today's group to a prior group with the same ethnic composition. The average height of Mexican-Americans is 5'6.8", for example. Therefore, of they have become a larger percentage of the population, the average height would decline.

Places like Houston, Texas and Orange County, California had in 1970 (more or less) no people of Vietnamese origin. Today they each have more than 100,000. I don't know the exact average height of Vietnamese-Americans, but I think it's safe to say that they haven't boosted the average, so a 1970-2005 comparison would not be apples-to-apples!

Georgia to OK Bible-based lit classes
"The measure calls for the courses to be taught 'in an objective and nondevotional manner with no attempt made to indoctrinate students.' But critics say that while the language may pass constitutional muster, that could change in the classroom if instructors stray."

"no attempt to indoctrinate students" (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more).
