Seven year old girl scout sells 2200 boxes of cookies
Althugh I'm not sure if it should count as a record, because Roman Polanski bought 2100 of them.

A year with no Cinderella.
Kentucky and Nevada lost, as expected. Of the sixteen remaining teams, there is a number seven seed (UNLV) and a six (Vandy). Every other team is a five or better! Not one team from the lower half of the brackets.

So much for Winthrop
The Rockefellers jumped out to a 27-23 lead, but just didn't have the manpower to stay with Oregon. Within three minutes of the start of the second half, they were down by ten. They never got close again.

Say sayonara to a #2 seed. The Badgers fall to UNLV
Down by twelve at halftime, the Badgers clawed their way back to a 53-48 lead with a 26-9 run. Then they ran out of steam.

There will be no George Mason this year. Get this: UNLV is now the Cinderella team! As I write this, they are the only #7 team to make the sweet sixteen, and no weaker seeds have made it. Every single team from the bottom half of the bracket has now been eliminated, but another #7 and a #8 are still in the running, pending later games. #7 Nevada plays Memphis later today, and #8 Kentucky tries its luck against Kansas. The oddsmakers give Nevada a 32% chance to win, Kentucky 36%

With all the bad news we hear every day, it's nice to see an occasional breath of springtime: Jennifer Hudson says no to nudity
Actually, it really would be good news if she was just announcing that she will not get naked. I mean, I saw the shower scene in Big Momma's House, and that was all I needed of that particular sight. The problem is that she will not appear in any film where ANYBODY gets naked.

Wait! You haven't heard the most shocking part yet. He (allegedly) assaulted females!

News anchor has to apologize for saying she sometimes feels "like a retard."
Turns out only a real retard would say that. Wait. I mean a real retard would never say that because it's politically incorrect. Well, anyway, the other retards didn't like it.

It's time, once again for Uncle Scoopy's Tips for Youngsters. Here are some things you can call retards, because "retard" is offensive:

  • People of differing abilities
  • People with extraordinary needs
  • People with alternative perceptions
  • Exceptional people
  • Administration spokesmen

Weekend Box Office Results for March 16-18, 2007
No special surprises this week. As expected, the newcomers could not take either of the top two spots, althopugh Premonition came closer than expected, and went down to the wire fighting for second place.

If Premonition (Bullock supernatural thriller) did a bit better than expected, I Think I Love My Wife (Chris Rock remake of a French art film) did quite a bit (30%, i.e.) worse.

300 dropped a bit faster than expected, but I believe that is because the predictions were too optimistic. Fanboy movies always drop significantly in week two, not because they have poor word-of-mouth, which is the usual explanation for that phenomenon, but simply because they are heavily front-loaded.

Overall the weekend was nothing to crow about, as should be expected when there are no strong newcomers. The top twelve did a bit more than $100 million, and that was 9% above last year, but it was 3% below 2005, so it was just another day at the office. Box office that is.

Next week is an unusual one, in that SIX wide releases will devour 14,000 screens between them. (This week's three new releases, in contrast, only occupied about 5,000 screens altogether.)

Maryland Senate approves resolution apologizing for slavery
Maryland was one of the last states in the USA with legal slavery. (Kentucky was the last.)

Most people don't realize that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation did not free anyone. Lincoln declared that only the slaves over which he had no control were free (those in the Confederacy). He did NOT free the slaves over which he actually did have have control (several slave-holding states remained loyal to the Union.) Lincoln would not take the political risk of freeing the slaves in the Union because he could not afford to drive the slave-owning border states into the Confederacy. Therefore, some of the Union states had slavery for a brief time even after the Civil War had ended!

To put it another way, the Union had slaves longer than the Confederacy! Texas freed the last slaves from the Confederacy in June of 1865. Kentucky, a Union state, still had slaves until December when the thirteenth amendment was ratified.

Female teacher gets six months in stir for blowing a 17-year-old student.
Worst of all, she pled guilty to get a plea bargain, and the judge ignored the bargain. (That is technically his right, but many constitutional scholars consider it a violation of the fifth amendment rights of the accused.)

And there you have the downside of women's liberation. Thirty years ago nobody would have considered a 23 year old woman to be victimizinmg a 17 year old boy by having sex with him, but would have considered it a serious crime the other way around. Women wanted the double standard removed, and gained a lot in the process, but this was part of the price they paid.

Carol Burnett sues a cartoon
It's bad enough that she is litigious without any merit in her case, but it's deeply troubling to realize that somebody who made a living at comedy has no sense of humor.
