The REAL Pirates have returned. Nady's fielding gaffe deflects Dunn's fly ball over the fence for a HR
Those two runs proved to be the margin of defeat for the Bucs. Those are the Corsairs we know and love!

A-Rod blows another one
Let's see. He hit a homer in the first when they Yankees were down by one, to put them up by one, after which they managed to fall behind 7-2 until A-Rod finally came back in the bottom of the ninth to hit a walk-off grand slam - with two outs - and two strikes on him. In between he had a double and a walk and two other runs scored, and batted in every runner on base when he was up. Final for the day: three extra base hits, four runs scored, six ribbies.

But he could have done more, dammit! In his other at bat he made an out. I wonder how long the Yankee fans booed him for that.

retroCRUSH: charity songs of the 80s and 90s
I forgot how many talented people they brought together to sing We Are The World, and what a diverse group they were. Just about everyone in the country who could carry a tune, and all the biggest stars at the time. I love Springsteen, but his voice really didn't blend very well with the others.

Daily Box Office for Friday, April 6, 2007
Grindhouse disappoints with a fourth place finish. It not only got beat by two carry-overs, but it couldn't even beat the Ice Cube movie (8% positive reviews)! It didn't even do a lot better than The Reaping! (9% positive reviews)

The other well-reviewed major film, The Hoax, did no better than Grindhouse, finishing with about the same average per theater.

Who was the Sanjaya of the 80s?
Well, if Sanjaya turns out to be as cool as Depp, I suppose he'll get more respect. I don't really remember much Depp ridicule from the hipsters back then. The two Coreys? Now that's another story.

Live performances of just about every possible Jim Croce song.
I can never believe that he and Maury Muehleisen (his partner in the beautiful guitar duets) have been dead for 33 years. I must have had a little dust in my eye when I watched a couple of these vids. Below is Time in a Bottle

Black Sheep movie trailer.
It's basically Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, except with sheep instead of tomatoes. The Violence of the Lambs. Looks like it might be funny.

ROTTEN TOMATOES: Opening Movies. Weekend update
Now that many critics have had a chance to respond to the films, here are the percentages of positive reviews

Grindhouse 84

Hoax 84

Firehouse Dog 34

The Reaping 9

Are we done yet? 8

I wonder. So many of the films with black casts, especially comedies, get atrocious scores from critics and IMDb readers. Is that because almost all these movies suck? Or is the taste of white critics and fanboy America just that far from the sensibility and/or humor of black audiences? I honestly don't know (or have a good guess at) the answer to this question.

Liberal blogs get PUNKED by Photoshopped Sleestaks
Here's Wonkette's reaction: "The folder is from an Internet hosting company called Coptix. This proves without doubt that Karl Rove is illegally running all the White House e-mail through a private company instead of the White House government servers which belong to the American People. Anyway, everybody knew all that weeks or months ago, but now there's a picture of Karl Rove holding a folder."

Note: Coptix is not an internet hosting company. It is a design firm. Their name got involved because they do some back-up DNS routing, which is unrelated to internet hosting. When you type "japaneseoctopusporn.com" into your computer, DNS servers magically route you toward the actual octopi.

Here's another take on the hoax, written by an insider.

Indians opening day game called on account of snow!
It was controversial. It was one strike away from being an official game. The umpires' decision cost Paul Byrd a no-hitter, which he could have officially achieved with one more successful pitch.

Mussina, Giambi hand game to lowly Orioles. ESPN, Yankee fans blame A-Rod!
Giambi went 0-for-5 with six runners left on base. Mussina threw four innings of batting practice to the Orioles, who had not won a single game. But the ESPN story says, "Alex Rodriguez failed to come through in another big situation." Know what that exact situation was? In the seventh inning, with two on and none out and the Yanks down by three, he struck out. Anybody who knows baseball knows that virtually every player has just such a situation in virtually every game, and it's not a newsworthy item. The best hitters hit 30% of the time, not 90%. Giambi (who actually makes more money than A-Rod) had several such at bats in this game alone!

Giambi's salary $23.4 million, and he doesn't play the field

A-Rod's salary: $22.7 million, and he's the game's best shortstop playing third base.

The 'Highest' Spot on Earth?
"If you define 'highest' as highest from sea level, Mount Everest is still champion. But if you want to stand on the place on Earth that is closest to the moon, that would be Mount Chimborazo!"

(This has to do with the earth's bulge at the equator.)
